Activity Overview:

Something good is that Costa Rica offers body-temperature water with few humans and abundant marine life. If you are looking for fine opportunities to see massive schools of fish, as well as larger marine animals such as turtles, sharks, dolphins and whales, then jump right in. There are decent places sites that can be explored on a discovery basis. There are opportunities for good snorkelling in Costa Rica, though great locations are few and far between. Due to this, most Costa Rica snorkelling tours are run in combination with other activities such as hiking, kayaking or a catamaran cruise.

Top 3 Tours:

Location: Puerto Viejo.

Description: Cahuita National Park has the largest system of Coral Reefs in Costa Rica, including 6 species of coral, a wide range of colorful tropical fishes and the occasional encounter of a harmless reef shark or stingray. This beach has a horse shoe shape, with the entrance of the park at one end and beautiful Punta Cahuita at the other end. We start with a scenic 20 minute boat ride to have two snorkeling sessions. While in the water you will follow a guide, a Cahuita native and nature specialist, who will explain the coral reef and the lush wildlife. Then we get drop off at the Punta to enjoy a delicious fruit and snacks break at the beach followed by a 1 hour guided hike in this wonderful coastal forest: monkeys, sloths, birds, poison dart frogs, iguanas and other interesting encounters are common.

Description: Kayak and snorkel exploring marine wildlife during this exciting 4-hour excursion departing from the pier in Quepos. Paddle your kayak for a little over an hour navigating past tiny islands and observing marine birds and their nesting grounds. Biesanz Bay, a hidden beautiful inlet where you can rest, enjoy a snack and snorkel. The 30-minute stop will allow you to explore the coastline. Water’s visibility will vary depending on the season, and there will be opportunities to spot parrotfish, starfish, angelfish and maybe even a sea turtle. Get ready to paddle back to the pier on your kayak, and during the journey look for pelicans, flying fish or other marine life. Upon returning to the pier, you’ll head back to base camp to enjoy a little conversation over a delicious homemade meal.

Location: Nearby San Jose.

Description: A wonderful day at the beautiful white sand beach of Tortuga Island, riding on a world class yacht catamaran, enjoying gourmet dining featured in Gourmet Magazine.

Once at Isla Tortuga you will have the opportunity to enjoy snorkelling and explore by your own. This is a very remote area but very visited to enjoy a real Costa Rican Island day.

In the afternoon, you will cruise past many of the islands in the Gulf of Nicoya taking a different route back to port; important to not only foreign travellers to see and learn more of Costa Rica’s history but also for national tourism and those who want to see up close, maybe for the first time, the beautiful and protected uninhabited islands and bird sanctuaries in the Gulf of Nicoya accessible only by water. After passing the now closed famous prison Island San Lucas you will witness a beautiful sunset.
